On the evening of January 18, 2025, a fatal shooting in an apartment on South Fifth Street in Ames, Iowa, resulted in the death of 25-year-old Parker Stoneburner, a Caucasian male from Boone. Ames police officers responded to an emergency call around 6:30 p.m. and discovered Stoneburner with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Friends and family remembered Stoneburner as a kind-hearted person, an avid athlete in high school who had a passion for cars, fishing, and sports. He worked as an HVAC installer and had recently purchased a home that he was in the process of remodeling with his parents.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that Stoneburner was the victim of a robbery scheme that had been orchestrated by several individuals. According to police reports, 19-year-old Destiny Skurdal of Ames allegedly used Snapchat to lure Stoneburner to her apartment. Waiting there to ambush him were 21-year-old Zoe Anderson of Boone and 19-year-old Abraham M. Guhnics of Independence, Missouri. During the attempted robbery, a confrontation occurred, and Stoneburner was shot. Despite his injuries, he was able to open the door for the responding police officers. Inside the apartment, investigators found shell casings, drugs, and both real and counterfeit money.
In the weeks and months following the shooting, law enforcement made a series of arrests in connection with the case. Destiny Skurdal was the first to be taken into custody on January 24, initially charged with first-degree robbery, with a first-degree murder charge added later. On February 24, U.S. Marshals apprehended Zoe Anderson and Abraham Guhnics in Independence, Missouri; both were charged with first-degree murder. The fourth and final suspect, 19-year-old Nashawn Green of Ankeny, was arrested in Minnesota on a first-degree murder warrant in late March. Authorities believe Green was the last of the principal individuals involved in the fatal robbery.
