In the spring of 2025, the life of 16-year-old Chase Lionel Watson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A male student at Snider High School, he was known for his love of sports and was remembered as a respectable and charming young man. The events that led to his untimely death on the evening of March 20th unfolded in and around a white Kia Optima on Pennsylvania Street, forever altering the lives of several teenagers and their families.
That Thursday
night, what began as an arrangement to steal a gun escalated into a fatal shooting. Chase Watson got into the backseat of the car with three other high school students. An exchange of gunfire erupted inside the vehicle, the muzzle flashes captured by street surveillance cameras. Mortally wounded, Chase managed to run back into his home, where his mother made a frantic 911 call. Despite the immediate medical attention, he succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds. Two other teenagers in the car also sustained gunshot injuries, one in the leg.
The investigation that followed quickly led to the identification of the individuals involved. One of the first to be taken into custody was 18-year-old Jaiden Landis, also a student at Snider High School. His father, fearing his son's involvement with a new group of friends, brought him to the police headquarters. During questioning, Landis admitted to being in the car and having a 9mm handgun that he claimed to have stolen from Watson. He alleged that Watson had fired first. After the shooting, Landis fled the scene, leaving his cell phone behind in the car, which ultimately helped investigators track him down. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and robbery.
Another teenager in the car, 17-year-old Cory Cronkley Jr., was also arrested. In a development that shed more light on the intricate and tragic nature of the incident, Cronkley Jr. pleaded guilty to a charge of assisting a criminal. This plea was part of an agreement that would see the more severe charges of murder and robbery dismissed. His sentencing was scheduled for October 24th. The third teenager who was shot and injured in the car was also identified, though his level of cooperation with the police investigation varied. The case against Jaiden Landis, who is being held without bail at the Allen County Jail, is proceeding through the court system, with a community still grappling with the senseless violence that claimed the life of a young man.
