Treyvon Winfield, a 19-year-old African American male and senior at Morgan Park High School in Chicago, was fatally shot on the evening of April 15, 2025. The incident occurred in the 1000 block of West 115th Street on the city’s Far South Side. According to reports, Winfield was with his girlfriend, a 23-year-old woman, who had arrived in a red Ford Fiesta to pick him up. An 18-year-old male from the neighborhood was also in the vehicle.
Prior to entering the car, Winfield had been walking with two other men in a gangway when an argument, possibly related to money, erupted among them. As the three entered the vehicle, one of the individuals began acting erratically and suddenly pulled out a handgun. The suspect exited the car and opened fire as Winfield’s girlfriend attempted to drive away. Realizing that Winfield had been shot, she rushed him to Roseland Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:28 p.m. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide, citing multiple gunshot wounds as the cause.
Winfield was described by his father, Albert Winfield, as a hardworking and deeply caring young man who had aspirations of studying engineering in college. He had been preparing for graduation and prom, looking forward to a future beyond Chicago. His sudden and violent death has left his family and community devastated. Morgan Park High School Principal Dan Kuzma expressed deep sorrow over the loss and assured that the school was working closely with the district’s Crisis Management Unit to provide grief counseling and support to students and staff.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with Winfield’s murder. The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction, and authorities have yet to release a description of the individual responsible. Chicago police continue to investigate the case, gathering evidence and seeking leads to identify and apprehend the shooter. The community has rallied in mourning, with loved ones and local leaders calling for justice and an end to senseless violence. A vigil was held outside Winfield’s family home in Harvey, where his father voiced his grief and frustration, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice for his son.
