On April 21, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM, law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex located at 1 South Ogle Avenue in Mount Morris, Illinois. Upon arrival, officers discovered 25-year-old Cameron Pasley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident was reportedly connected to a domestic dispute. Pasley was immediately transported to a local hospital, where medical personnel later pronounced them deceased.
Law enforcement quickly located and apprehended the suspect, 44-year-old Derek Swanlund, who was found a short distance from the crime scene. Swanlund was taken into custody without incident and subsequently transported to the Ogle County Jail. The Ogle County Sheriff's Office has charged Swanlund with First Degree Murder, and authorities have indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Pasley's sister has established a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with expenses. Within 24 hours of the campaign's launch, the community had already contributed nearly $2,500 in support of the family.
