On March 30, 2025, Lonnie Stephenwade Harley, a 44-year-old male, was fatally shot while riding a Miami-Dade Transit bus in Miami Gardens, Florida. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, shortly before 3 a.m., near Northwest 7th Avenue and 183rd Street. Harley was one of two victims in the shooting, alongside 46-year-old Ejaash Bail Carter. Both men were airlifted to Aventura Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The shooting stemmed from a disturbance on the bus involving a verbal dispute between passengers and the driver. The driver, identified as 30-year-old Oshane Griffiths, fired his weapon during the altercation, resulting in the deaths of Harley and Carter. Following the incident, Griffiths was detained for questioning, but no charges have been announced. Miami-Dade's Department of Transportation confirmed that bus operators are not permitted to carry firearms while on duty. Griffiths, who had been employed by the transit system since 2022, was placed on administrative leave and later resigned from his position. The department initiated termination proceedings in accordance with its collective bargaining agreement.
