On the night of August 22, 2024, in the city of Rexburg, Idaho, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 35-year-old Ariana Ramos Chavez. A mother of four, she was fatally shot multiple times in the upper body at her home on Lilac Street. The man responsible was her live-in partner, 32-year-old Fabian Hernandez.
The events of that Thursday evening unfolded following a heated argument between the couple, reportedly fueled by issues of infidelity and Hernandez's
drug use. The confrontation, which had been ongoing over text messages, culminated in Chavez demanding that Hernandez leave their home. In the ensuing moments, Hernandez retrieved a handgun he had purchased through a Facebook group and shot Chavez near the front stairs of their residence. The incident was witnessed by at least one of Chavez's children, who came home to the horrific scene of their mother's body and Hernandez standing nearby with the gun. Another child reportedly overheard the argument and witnessed Hernandez retrieve the weapon before hearing the fatal shots.
When Rexburg police officers arrived at the home around 11:15 p.m., they found Hernandez, who immediately surrendered, stating, "I'm the one you're looking for; I'm the suspect." Inside, they discovered Chavez deceased. Hernandez, who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, was taken into custody and booked into the Madison County Jail. During the booking process, a glass methamphetamine pipe was found in his possession. He later admitted to spending hundreds of dollars a week on the substance.
Initially charged with first-degree murder, felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor use or possession with intent to use drug paraphernalia, Fabian Hernandez later accepted a plea agreement. On December 16, 2024, he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree murder. This plea acknowledged that he killed Ariana Ramos Chavez without premeditation. In exchange for his guilty plea, the other charges were dropped. Hernandez is scheduled to be sentenced and faces the possibility of a life sentence.
