In the quiet town of Post Falls, Idaho, a grim story unfolded on February 23, 2025, culminating in the death of 46-year-old Nathan Rogers, a local business owner. The male victim, a White / Caucasian, was found shot to death inside his own home, a place that should have been his sanctuary. Rogers was the owner of the Inland Kava Bar in nearby Coeur d'Alene, where he was beginning to make a name for himself as a kind-hearted member of the community.
Friends and neighboring business owners remembered him as a man who wanted to bring a unique and relaxing experience to the area.
The horrifying events were captured on a Ring video camera inside the home. In the early hours of that Sunday, at approximately 5 a.m., a man dressed in black and armed with a gun was recorded entering the residence through a possibly unlocked front door. For about eight hours, the intruder was seen on video wandering through the house, at times without a mask. The situation escalated around 1:15 p.m. when Rogers returned home. A struggle ensued between a now-masked intruder and Rogers, which tragically ended with the intruder shooting Rogers multiple times.
The gruesome scene was witnessed remotely by Rogers' girlfriend. She was out picking up her daughter and, after being unable to reach Rogers by phone, she checked the home's security cameras. What she saw prompted her to immediately contact the Post Falls police. She was able to identify the man in the video as her ex-boyfriend, Jason M. Rook, 47. She told investigators that she had broken up with Rook in 2023 due to his alleged drug use and that he had been harassing her since the separation. This harassment reportedly included sending messages to her and her friends and posting explicit photos of her on Rogers' business Instagram page. She had even sought a protection order against him, which she was planning to file in court the day after the murder.
Following the shooting, a neighbor's camera captured a Jeep, matching the description of Rook's vehicle, leaving the residence. The next day, police located and arrested Rook in Coeur d'Alene. He was found hiding in his vehicle inside a garage at an apartment complex under construction. Rook was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and burglary. Later, additional charges of first-degree stalking and destruction of evidence were added. He is being held in the Kootenai County Jail without bail and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. In a significant development, prosecutors filed a notice of their intent to seek the death penalty against Rook, citing aggravating circumstances such as the murder being "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel" and that Rook exhibited a "propensity to commit murder." Rook's defense has filed motions to strike the notice, arguing against the constitutionality of Idaho's capital punishment laws.
