On the evening of Saturday, April 26, 2025, Deputy Sikes was on duty, participating in what began as a seemingly routine traffic stop on Interstate 20 near Augusta. He and three other deputies were tasked with serving a domestic violence temporary protective order. The subject of the order, James Blake Montgomery, initially appeared cooperative and non-threatening as the deputies approached his motor home. However, the situation escalated with shocking speed. As two of the deputies turned to walk back to their patrol vehicle, Montgomery produced a 9mm AR pistol, which had been illegally converted into a fully automatic weapon, and opened fire on the officers.
The sudden hail of bullets mortally wounded Deputy Sikes. Another deputy, Gavin White, was critically injured after being shot in the face. In the ensuing chaos, deputies returned fire. Montgomery attempted to flee in his camper but crashed along the highway. Hours later, after a tense standoff, law enforcement utilized drones to assess the vehicle and found the suspect, James Blake Montgomery, deceased inside from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. A subsequent search of the camper revealed a terrifying arsenal, including multiple firearms, ammunition, pipe bombs, and other explosive devices, one of which was rigged with a remote switch.

It was later revealed that Montgomery's estranged wife had sought the protective order due to numerous threats he had made against her, and a judge had ordered him to surrender any weapons just two days prior to the fatal shooting.
