On a cold Friday evening in Phenix City, Alabama, the life of 28-year-old Matthew James Brooks III was tragically cut short. The date was January 17, 2025, and what began as an ordinary night ended in violence in the parking lot of a Dollar General on Seale Road. It was there that gunshots shattered the evening calm, and responding authorities would find Brooks suffering from fatal wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:50 p.m.
