In the late hours of a Saturday night in Troy, Alabama, what began as a response to a noise complaint at a large party quickly escalated into a homicide investigation. On May 3, 2025, just two hours before he would have turned 20 years old, Nyreesh Amari Smith, a young man, was shot and killed. The incident occurred in the 100 block of Dunn Circle, where a sizable gathering of 100 to 250 people had drawn the attention of local law enforcement.
As officers were working to disperse the
crowd, gunshots rang out. In the aftermath, they discovered Smith on the ground, having sustained several gunshot wounds. First aid was administered at the scene by the officers, and medics who arrived shortly after continued efforts to save him with CPR. Despite their attempts, Nyreesh Amari Smith succumbed to his injuries before he could be transported to a hospital. The Troy Police Department, along with the Pike County Coroner's Office, Pike County Sheriff's Office, and the Pike County District Attorney's Office, began an investigation into the shooting.
Despite the large number of potential witnesses at the party, authorities reported that few individuals had come forward with information regarding the shooting. This prompted a public plea for anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact the Troy Police Department. The investigation led to a breakthrough with the arrest of Adrian Demond Moultry Jr., a 22-year-old from Troy.
Moultry was taken into custody and has been charged with murder in connection with the death of Nyreesh Amari Smith. Following his arrest, he was processed at the Troy City Jail and subsequently transferred to the Pike County Jail. He was being held there without bond, awaiting an Aniah's Law hearing, which allows judges to deny bail for violent offenses. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public.
