Melissa Ann Northrup, a 22-year-old woman, was tragically murdered on March 1, 1992. She was working at a convenience store in Waco, Texas, when she was abducted by Kenneth McDuff, a notorious serial killer. At the time of her abduction, Melissa was a mother of two and pregnant with her third child. Her body was discovered 51 days later in a gravel pit in southeast Dallas County, Texas, with her hands tied behind her back.
McDuff had a long history of violent crimes.
He had previously been sentenced to death for the 1966 murders of three teenagers but was later paroled in 1989 after his sentence was commuted to life. Following his release, he resumed his killing spree, abducting and murdering multiple women, including Melissa Northrup. Her case was one of several that led to widespread criticism of the Texas parole system, as McDuff had been released despite his violent past.
Melissa’s murder was part of a broader investigation into McDuff’s crimes. Authorities launched a nationwide manhunt for him, and he was eventually arrested in May 1992 while working on a garbage truck in Kansas City, Missouri. His capture was aided by his appearance on the television show "America’s Most Wanted". McDuff was convicted of Melissa’s murder and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection in November 1998. His case remains one of the most infamous examples of the dangers of parole for violent offenders.
