Zenzele Davis Mdadane, a 25-year-old South African man, was tragically murdered on February 19, 2011, in Butler Township, Ohio. Mdadane, who was in the United States on a work visa, was lured to Dayton by Muziwokuthula S. Madonda, another South African national, under the pretense of an undisclosed plan. Upon arrival, Madonda drove Mdadane to a secluded area in Butler Township and fatally shot him. The motive behind the murder was reportedly Madonda’s intent to assume Mdadane’s identity.
Madonda, who had already committed a murder in Akron, Ohio, prior to killing Mdadane, fled the state with Mdadane’s belongings and traveled to New Mexico. There, on March 20, 2011, he killed two more men in a hotel room before escaping to Texas. Texas Rangers later apprehended Madonda in a motel room, where they discovered a. 38 caliber revolver that had been used in all four homicides.
Following his arrest, Madonda faced multiple charges, including aggravated murder, murder, aggravated robbery, and felonious assault. The Montgomery County Grand Jury indicted him for Mdadane’s murder on March 17, 2022. On December 21, 2022, Madonda pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated murder with a three-year firearm specification and one count of felonious assault. During court proceedings, Madonda admitted that he had homicidal tendencies and stated that he would kill again if given the opportunity.
Madonda was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. His sentence was ordered to run consecutively to the 24-year sentence he received for the New Mexico murders and the 33-years-to-life sentence for the Akron homicide. The case highlighted the dangers of identity theft-related crimes and the tragic consequences of Madonda’s multi-state killing spree.
