In the late summer of 1999, the life of 28-year-old Jane Marie Chafton, a white female from Lawton, Oklahoma, came to a tragic and mysterious end. She was a mother and a sister who had once worked as an accountant before falling into a high-risk lifestyle that included substance abuse and sex work. Chafton was last seen on August 9, 1999, and had reportedly arranged for a taxi to pick her up from a Motel 6 for a trip to Duncan, a plan she later canceled, stating she had found another ride.
Four days later, on August 13, 1999, her nude body was discovered in the waters of Sandy Bear Creek, located in a rural area of Stephens County, about six miles northeast of Velma. Due to the condition of her body, which had been affected by the water and decomposition, a definitive cause of death could not be determined by the medical examiner. Investigators found no signs of trauma, but the circumstances were immediately deemed suspicious by law enforcement, as it was highly unlikely she would have ended up in the creek by natural means without any clothing or personal belongings.
The death of Jane Marie Chafton was not an isolated incident, but rather the first in a disturbing series of similar cases in the Lawton area. Between 1999 and 2003, the bodies of at least four other young women were found under comparable circumstances: nude and left in or near bodies of water. These women were also known to have engaged in high-risk activities, and some were acquainted with one another, leading investigators to suspect a possible serial offender was at large.
Despite extensive investigations by local authorities and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, who sought assistance from the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit to analyze potential patterns, Chafton's case, along with the others, remains unsolved. While numerous persons of interest have been interviewed over the years, no suspects have ever been officially named or arrested in connection with her death. Law enforcement continues to appeal to the public for any information that might shed light on this cold case, hoping that advancements in forensic technology, such as DNA analysis, may one day bring justice for Jane Marie Chafton and the other victims.
