Sherrie Ann Carville, a 17-year-old Caucasian female from Johnstown, New York, was murdered on October 22, 1978. She had been out with friends at a local tavern, The Wayside Inn, when they became separated. While walking home, she encountered John W. Hopkins, a man who had a history of violent crimes against women. Hopkins offered her a ride, and she willingly got into his vehicle.
