The young man, who was studying mechanical engineering, was last seen by his roommates on the evening of Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his apartment near the Clemson campus. He had been in good spirits, having recently been inducted into the elite Pershing Rifles ROTC unit and was excited about his future.
Concern grew when
Jason, who was known to be in regular contact with his family, failed to make his daily call to his mother. Ten days after he was last seen, his white 1990 Chevrolet Beretta was discovered locked and abandoned in a parking area at Table Rock State Park, located about 30 miles from Clemson. Inside the vehicle, investigators found untouched food and drinks, and a park pass bearing Jason's fingerprints, confirming he had been at the park. This discovery prompted one of the largest search efforts in the park's history, involving extensive ground searches, canine units, helicopters, and even the draining of a lake, yet no sign of Jason was ever found.
The circumstances surrounding Jason Knapp's disappearance remain an enigma. Investigators have never ruled out the possibility of foul play, though no evidence has ever emerged to support that theory.
