Investigators have long suspected that Melton was a victim of
the notorious serial killer duo known as the 'Speed Freak Killers,' Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog. These two men were responsible for a series of murders throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and Melton's case bore similarities to other victims linked to them. Shermantine remains on death row for multiple murders, while Herzog, who was paroled, was found dead in an apparent suicide shortly after learning that Shermantine was cooperating with authorities.
Melton's family, particularly her daughter Bobbie Carter and her sister Sharon Melton, have struggled with the lack of timely communication from law enforcement regarding the case. Sharon Melton had long suspected that her sister was murdered by Shermantine and Herzog, and she sought assistance from bounty hunter Leonard Padilla, who had been actively investigating the killers. Padilla's involvement led to renewed scrutiny of the case, and shortly after he informed Herzog that Shermantine was providing information to authorities, Herzog took his own life.
