Martha Avery, an 84-year-old woman, was among the victims in a series of suspicious deaths that occurred at Petersburg General Hospital in June 1974. Avery, along with five other elderly patients, was allegedly murdered by Lee Roy Hargrave Jr., a 20-year-old nurse’s aide working the night shift in the hospital’s coronary care unit. Hargrave was accused of injecting his victims with lidocaine, a heart depressant, leading to their deaths.
