On September 3, 2023, 20-year-old Adrionna Brooks-West, a sophomore studying agriculture at Virginia State University (VSU), was fatally shot in Petersburg, Virginia. The incident occurred around 11:04 p.m. in the 700 block of High Street, where police responding to reports of gunfire found Brooks-West deceased at the scene.
