On a tragic Sunday night, September 3, 2023, the life of 20-year-old Adrionna Brooks-West was cut short by gun violence in Petersburg, Virginia. A sophomore studying agriculture at Virginia State University, Brooks-West was found deceased by police who were responding to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of High Street at approximately 11:04 p.m.
Originally from Chester, Virginia, she was known for her motivated and spirited nature.
The Petersburg Bureau of Police swiftly investigated the fatal shooting. Their efforts led to the prompt arrest of a male juvenile suspect. The unidentified young man was taken into custody and faced serious charges in connection with Brooks-West's death.
The juvenile suspect was charged with first-degree murder, three counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The tragic event marked the second time in just nine days that a Virginia State University student was killed by gunfire, deeply affecting the university community and leading to calls for an end to gun violence in the area.
