Irene Thirkield, a 32-year-old Black woman, was found murdered on May 2, 1978, at a rifle range near Fort Benning, Georgia. Her death was part of a series of killings that had gripped Columbus, Georgia, at the time. Thirkield, along with another victim, Brenda Gail Faison, was targeted by William Henry Hance, a soldier stationed at Fort Benning who was later convicted of multiple murders.
