In a quiet Dearborn Heights, Michigan neighborhood, the life of 5-year-old Koi Green was tragically cut short on September 21, 2016. That day, she and her 4-year-old sister, Kaleigh Green, were poisoned with carbon monoxide inside a car by their father, Gregory Green. After their deaths, he brought their bodies back into the house and placed them in their beds. Koi was an African American girl who loved school, her teachers, and had many friends.
She was learning to speak Spanish, enjoyed dressing up, and participated in cheerleading and ballet.
The horrific events of that day did not end with the deaths of the two youngest children. Gregory Green also targeted his stepchildren, 19-year-old Chadney Allen and 17-year-old Kara Allen. In the basement of their home, he shot them both to death. Their mother and Gregory's wife, Faith Green, was forced to witness the murders of her older children after being bound with duct tape and zip ties. Gregory Green had also attacked her with a box cutter and shot her in the foot. Despite her injuries, Faith Green survived the brutal assault.
After committing these acts, Gregory Green himself called 911 and confessed to killing his family. When police arrived at the home on Hipp Street, he was waiting on the porch and was taken into custody without incident. The investigation revealed that the poisoning of Koi and her sister was carried out by running a hose from the car's exhaust into the vehicle. It was later learned that Faith Green had recently filed for divorce, which is believed to have been the motive for the killings.
Gregory Green had a violent past, having previously served 16 years in prison for the 1991 murder of his first wife, who was pregnant at the time. In the case of his children's deaths, he was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, as well as torture, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and unlawful imprisonment. He ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 45 to 100 years in prison, making it unlikely he will ever be eligible for parole.
