On October 8, 1974, Martha Ann McClendon, a 24-year-old African American woman, was brutally murdered in Fort Worth, Texas. Employed as a machine helper at a furniture manufacturing company, Martha was visiting her sister, 22-year-old Laura McClendon, at the Riverside Village apartment complex. Also present were their 19-year-old cousin, Linda McClendon, and their two-year-old children, Natasha and Steven.
The family gathering turned tragic when Kenneth Granviel, a 23-year-old acquaintance of the McClendon family, arrived uninvited.
Granviel, who had a history of violent behavior and was previously dishonorably discharged from the military, entered the apartment under the pretense of seeking a glass of water. Once inside, he brandished a knife and forced Laura and her son Steven into a bedroom, where he bound them. As Martha, Linda, and the children returned to the apartment, Granviel systematically subdued and restrained each of them. He then proceeded to commit a series of heinous acts, including the rape and murder of the women and children. Martha was raped and stabbed to death, as were Laura and Linda. The two children, Natasha and Steven, were also fatally stabbed. Granviel stole money from the victims before fleeing the scene.
Initially, two Mexican nationals were wrongfully arrested for the murders, as Granviel was not immediately considered a suspect despite his known association with the family. It wasn't until February 8, 1975, after Granviel committed additional violent crimes, including the rape and murder of two more women, that he was apprehended. Upon arrest, Granviel confessed to the murders of Martha and her family members, as well as the subsequent killings. He was convicted and sentenced to death. After numerous appeals, Kenneth Granviel was executed by lethal injection in February 1996 at the Huntsville Unit in Texas.
