In the summer of 1996, a distressing discovery was made in a Springfield, Massachusetts apartment. The body of 20-year-old Amy Smith, a female, was found in a closet by a social worker who had come for a routine visit. The scene was grim; her hands were bound, and a sock had been stuffed in her mouth. An autopsy would later reveal that she had died of asphyxia.
