A simmering argument at a Roseville graduation party on August 6, 2017, tragically escalated, ending the life of 18-year-old Luke Nolan Filary. Filary, a White male from Clinton Township, was fatally shot when a dispute at the gathering on Callahan Street turned violent.
The incident began after a group of individuals, including 20-year-old Amer Mongogna of Eastpointe, were asked to leave the party. Mongogna and his companions returned a short time later and, according to investigators, initiated an unprovoked fight, indiscriminately assaulting partygoers. In the midst of the chaos, Mongogna pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots into the crowd. Filary was struck and killed. Another individual, a 38-year-old woman from Washington Township, was also shot at but was not injured.
Following an investigation, Roseville police arrested Mongogna. He was initially charged with second-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm offenses. The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, which was registered to Mongogna who did not have a concealed pistol license, was later recovered at a residence in St. Clair Shores.
Ultimately, Mongogna accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, in addition to the felony firearm charge. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 12 to 17 years in prison for his role in the death of Luke Filary. During the legal proceedings, Mongogna expressed remorse for his actions, a sentiment that the victim's family found difficult to accept given the profound loss they had endured.
