Sarah F. Abrams, a 75-year-old woman, passed away on February 10, 1988, under circumstances that initially appeared natural but later raised suspicions. At the time of her death, family members noticed bruising around her nose and mouth and requested an autopsy, but their request was dismissed by coroners who attributed her death to a heart attack. Abrams was neither bedridden nor suicidal, and her only notable health issues were related to old age.
More than a year after her passing, following incriminating statements made by Jeffrey Lynn Feltner, her body was exhumed for further examination. The autopsy revealed that she had been smothered, and her ribs were broken, confirming that her death was not natural. Feltner, a nurse's aide at the New Life Acres nursing home in Melrose, Florida, had anonymously contacted a crisis hotline in July 1988, confessing to multiple killings, including Abrams'. He claimed to have an uncontrollable impulse to end the suffering of his patients and warned that he would likely kill again.
Feltner was later arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder, having smothered seven patients between 1988 and 1989. Initially confessing but later recanting his statements, he pleaded guilty to two of the murders in exchange for a 25-to-life sentence, avoiding further charges for the other killings. He ultimately died in prison from complications related to AIDS. Despite the delayed investigation into Abrams' death, the case became part of the broader inquiry into Feltner's actions, revealing a disturbing pattern of patient killings within the nursing home.
