Harrelson was married to Nancy "Nannie" Hazel, a woman who would later become infamous for her crimes. His cause of death was determined to be rat poison, which had been administered by his wife.
Harrelson's wife, Nannie Doss, was a serial killer responsible for the deaths of multiple individuals, including
several of her husbands. She had a history of poisoning those close to her, often seeking financial gain or personal satisfaction. Her crimes spanned decades, and she was eventually apprehended in 1954 after the suspicious death of her fifth husband.
Investigations into Harrelson's death revealed that he was one of many victims in Doss's long history of murder.
