Warren Andrews, a 52-year-old lawyer, was found unconscious at Land's End in San Francisco in April 1975. He had suffered severe traumatic injuries from a brutal beating and never regained consciousness, passing away weeks later on June 22, 1975. Authorities later identified him as a probable sixth victim of the elusive serial killer known as the 'Doodler.'
The Doodler was an unidentified assailant who preyed upon gay men in San Francisco during the mid-1970s, leaving a trail of unsolved murders. Andrews, a white male, fit the victim profile of the Doodler, who was known to target gay men and leave their bodies in parks or beaches around the city.
Unlike the other victims, who were stabbed to death, Andrews was bludgeoned with a rock and a tree branch. Despite this difference in the method of killing, investigators considered the similarities in location, time period, and victimology strong enough to link his death to the serial killer. The Doodler was believed to be a young Black man with a talent for drawing, reportedly sketching caricatures while conversing with his victims before attacking them. The case remained unsolved for decades, with police struggling to gather enough evidence to make an arrest. Several survivors provided descriptions of the suspect, but fear of public exposure prevented them from testifying, stalling the investigation.
In recent years, renewed efforts have been made to solve the case. The San Francisco Police Department increased the reward for information leading to the identification and conviction of the Doodler, raising it from $100,000 to $200,000. Investigators have also re-examined DNA evidence from crime scenes, hoping to connect the dots and finally bring the perpetrator to justice. Despite these efforts, no one has been formally charged in connection with Andrews' murder or the other killings attributed to the Doodler. The case remains one of San Francisco's most infamous unsolved serial killings, leaving lingering questions about the identity of the murderer and the full extent of their crimes.
