Joseph J. Cushman, a 52-year-old male corrections employee, tragically lost his life on October 24, 1982, in a violent incident at the Menard Correctional Center in Illinois. Cushman, who had served with the Illinois Department of Corrections for 19 years, was working as an agricultural lead worker at the time of his death. He was bludgeoned to death by an inmate, Bruce Davis, who was attempting to escape from the facility.
Davis, who had been serving a 25 to 45-year sentence for a prior murder conviction, used a blunt object to carry out the attack. Following the murder, Davis stole Cushman’s pickup truck to facilitate his escape.
The aftermath of the incident saw Davis captured a few weeks later and returned to Illinois, where he was convicted of Cushman’s murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Davis, however, did not serve his full sentence, as he died by suicide in his cell at the Menard Psychiatric Center on December 12, 1988.
