On August 21, 1981, 31-year-old Daryle Cole, an African American male, and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Stacey Balonek, a Caucasian female, were tragically murdered in Toledo, Ohio. The couple had recently returned from a trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, and were parked near Stacey's residence on Doyle Street when they were approached by Anthony Cook.
Cook forced them at gunpoint into the trunk of Daryle's 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix and drove them to a secluded area beneath the Central Avenue overpass. There, Stacey was sexually assaulted, and both victims were brutally beaten to death with Daryle's aluminum baseball bat.
The bodies of Daryle and Stacey were discovered in the trunk of the vehicle, revealing the horrific nature of the crime. The investigation into their deaths led authorities to suspect Anthony Cook, who was later apprehended. Cook, along with his brother Nathaniel, was responsible for a series of violent crimes in the Toledo area during that period. Anthony Cook was convicted of multiple murders, including that of Daryle Cole and Stacey Balonek, and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Nathaniel Cook was also convicted for his involvement in several of the crimes and received a lengthy prison sentence.
The Cook brothers' crime spree instilled fear throughout the Toledo community, as they targeted young couples and individuals in a series of abductions, sexual assaults, and murders between 1980 and 1981. Their eventual arrests and convictions brought an end to their reign of terror and provided some measure of justice for the victims and their families.
