Thomas John “Tom” Gordon, a 24-year-old man from Toledo, Ohio, was tragically murdered on May 14, 1980. His death was part of a series of brutal crimes committed by the Cook brothers, Anthony and Nathaniel Cook, who were later identified as serial killers responsible for multiple murders in the Toledo area. On the night of May 13, 1980, Gordon and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Sandra Podgorski, were sitting in his car outside her home when they were ambushed by the Cook brothers.
Anthony Cook approached the driver's side while Nathaniel Cook shattered the passenger-side window with the butt of a rifle. The brothers forced their way into the vehicle, abducting the couple and driving them to a secluded area.
Once at the remote location, Gordon attempted to escape, but Nathaniel Cook shot him multiple times, killing him. Meanwhile, Anthony Cook subjected Podgorski to a horrific assault, raping and stabbing her numerous times before leaving her for dead. Miraculously, Podgorski survived the attack and later provided crucial testimony that helped convict the Cook brothers. Gordon's murder was the first of three killings the brothers committed together, marking the beginning of their reign of terror in Toledo.
The Cook brothers were eventually apprehended and convicted for their crimes. Anthony Cook was sentenced to multiple life terms, while Nathaniel Cook received a sentence ranging from 15 to 75 years. Their crimes, which spanned from 1973 to 1981, primarily targeted young couples, and their brutal methods instilled fear throughout the city. The brothers were linked to at least nine murders, including the killing of Gordon, through DNA evidence and confessions obtained years after their initial arrests.
