Ronald Craig Gatlin, an 18-year-old male, tragically lost his life on March 15, 1980. Ronald, who was of Caucasian descent, was abducted by the notorious serial killer William Bonin, also known as 'The Freeway Killer.' Bonin was responsible for the rape, torture, and murder of numerous young boys and men during his reign of terror. Ronald was abducted shortly after dropping his father at a restaurant and leaving a friend's home in North Hollywood.
He was subjected to horrific abuse, including rape, beating, and torture, before being strangled to death with a ligature. His body, bound hand and foot, was discovered the following day in Duarte, California.
The investigation into Ronald's death revealed that he had suffered several deep, perforating ice pick wounds to his ear and neck. These injuries, along with the ligature marks, indicated the brutal nature of his murder. Bonin, who was later convicted of multiple murders, confessed to Ronald's killing among many others. The case against Bonin was built on the testimonies of his accomplices and the physical evidence found at the crime scenes. Bonin was eventually executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison in 1996.
The legal proceedings surrounding Ronald's murder were extensive. Bonin was portrayed by prosecutors as one of the most evil individuals to have ever existed. He was found guilty of 14 murders, although he confessed to 21 and was suspected of even more.
