In the spring of 1997, a quiet neighborhood in Paulina, Louisiana, was rocked by the violent death of one of its own. Barbara Bourgeois, a 58-year-old female teacher's aide at Lutcher High School, was a familiar and comforting presence in her community. Her predictable daily routine, which included fetching her morning newspaper, was a small but noted detail of neighborhood life. It was the disruption of this very routine on March 18, 1997, that first signaled something was terribly wrong.
A concerned neighbor, noticing that Bourgeois had not collected her paper or left for work, contacted the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office. Deputies dispatched to her home for what they anticipated might be a medical emergency instead discovered a scene of brutal violence. It was clear a struggle had taken place, and Barbara Bourgeois was found dead.
The investigation into her death would eventually unmask a serial killer who had been preying on residents in the River Parishes. The man responsible was Daniel Joseph Blank, a 35-year-old mechanic who lived only a quarter-mile from Bourgeois. His connection to the community ran deeper than just proximity; he had worked for some of his victims and was a known figure to others. Blank's deadly spree, which authorities later said was driven by a gambling addiction, included the murders of at least five other people and the attempted murder of a couple who would later provide a description that aided in his capture.
Blank was apprehended in Onalaska, Texas, on November 14, 1997, where he had relocated and started a new mechanic shop. Following his arrest, he confessed on videotape to the string of brutal crimes. In his chilling confession regarding Barbara Bourgeois, Blank detailed how he broke into her home through a back window. When she tried to defend herself by swinging a vacuum cleaner at him, he overpowered her, seizing the appliance and beating her with it. Bourgeois then armed herself with a knife, but Blank wrested it from her and used it to fatally stab her. The details he provided matched the evidence found at the crime scene.
During his trial for the murder of Barbara Bourgeois, which began in February 2001, the prosecution presented his taped confession. The graphic and detailed account proved to be a turning point. After the tape was played for the jury, and following a brief recess, Blank’s defense team attempted to secure a plea bargain. When that was denied, Daniel Blank changed his plea to guilty. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for her murder. This sentence was one of several he received; for other murders in his crime spree, he was sentenced to death. His girlfriend at the time, Cynthia Bellard, was also arrested and initially faced charges, but they were later dropped in exchange for her testimony about Blank's killing spree.
