On December 9, 1993, Jimmy West, a Black male, was tragically killed outside a liquor lounge in Jacksonville, Florida. The incident occurred as Jimmy West and Tamecka Smith, a Black female, were entering a car in the establishment's parking lot. Unbeknownst to West, his half-brother, Theodore Wright, had previously sold the vehicle to him. Michael Bell, seeking revenge for the death of his brother, Lamar Bell, mistakenly identified the car as still belonging to Wright. Armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, Bell approached the vehicle and, at point-blank range, fired twelve bullets into West and four into Smith, resulting in their immediate deaths. A third individual present managed to escape unharmed.
The motive behind this tragic event traces back to June 1993, when Theodore Wright fatally shot Lamar Bell in a confrontation later deemed justifiable self-defense. Dissatisfied with this outcome, Michael Bell vowed to avenge his brother's death. Over the subsequent months, Bell expressed to friends and family his intent to kill Wright. On December 8, 1993, he acquired an AK-47 rifle, a thirty-round magazine, and ammunition through a girlfriend. The following evening, upon spotting the familiar yellow Plymouth, Bell mistakenly believed Wright was present and executed his fatal plan.
Following the shooting, Bell fired additional rounds into the front of the lounge, endangering approximately a dozen patrons awaiting entry. He then fled to his aunt's residence, reportedly stating, "Theodore got my brother and now I got his brother." Bell was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. During his trial in March 1995, he pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense and asserting he believed West was reaching for a weapon. However, the defense did not present any evidence or witnesses to support this claim. The jury found Bell guilty on both counts and unanimously recommended the death penalty, which the court imposed, citing multiple aggravating circumstances.
