Duane Gerald Lanter, a 57-year-old man from Jacksonville, FL, was tragically shot in the head on December 14, 2018, at his home on Napoli Road. On the night of the shooting, Jessica Leigh Williams, a 37-year-old woman who worked at an adult entertainment establishment, was seen with two men, James Gates III, 27, and Derik Lawrence McMillian, 26. Williams met Duane Gerald Lanter at the establishment, and the two left together for a period of time. Later, Williams returned and met Gates and McMillian in the parking lot. The trio then proceeded to Lanter's home to conduct a drug transaction.
Upon arriving at Lanter's residence, Williams and Gates entered the home to carry out the deal. During the transaction, Gates shot Lanter in the head. After the shooting, Williams, Gates, and McMillian fled the scene together. Lanter was found by police and transported to a local hospital, where he died five days later.
Following the investigation, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrested Jessica Leigh Williams on charges of third-degree murder and selling cocaine. James Gates III was charged with second-degree murder and third-degree murder. Derik Lawrence McMillian, who was already in custody on unrelated charges, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in Lanter's murder. Williams was held on a $230,000 bail, while Gates was held without bail.
The case highlighted the dangers associated with drug-related activities and the tragic consequences that can arise from such situations.
