Corrections Officer John L. Wylie, a 39-year-old male, was a prison guard at the Steiner Valley state convict farm in Hill County, Texas. On the night of April 22, 1909, Wylie and two other guards were attempting to locate an escaping convict named Joe Yates. Around 9:00 p.m., while riding a mule along the Texas Central Railroad right of way near Fowler, the animal stumbled and fell.
