J. D. Tippit, a 39-year-old male police officer with the Dallas Police Department, was shot and killed on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. Tippit was born on September 18, 1924, near Annona, Texas, and was the eldest of seven children in his family. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star for his service. After the war, he joined the Dallas Police Department in 1952 and served for 11 years.
