Deputy Constable Ricky Steven Lewis, aged 22, was tragically shot to death near his patrol car in Mission, Texas, on February 17, 1979. He had just finished dropping off his partner and was heading home when he stopped an unknown individual. During the encounter, a struggle ensued, and the suspect managed to gain control of Lewis' handgun, using it to shoot him. When other officers arrived at the scene, they found Lewis' body lying on top of his .357 caliber handgun. Despite extensive investigations, no suspect or motive was ever identified in connection with his death.
Interestingly, Lewis' stolen duty weapon was later recovered during a search of a suspect's home. This suspect, who was never charged with Lewis' murder, was later found guilty of killing Trooper David Rucker and Patrolman Enrique Carrisalez in 1981 and was executed in 1993.
Lewis had served with the Hidalgo County Constable's Office - Precinct 3 for two years and was survived by his parents. His death remains an unsolved case, and his sacrifice is honored by fellow officers and the community.
