On August 5, 2019, ZaVhon Brown, a 15-year-old boy from Converse, Texas, tragically died after being shot in the face with an AR-15 rifle. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at a home in the 7500 block of Gander Park. ZaVhon was rushed to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Converse Police Department identified Robert Rene Amaya, a 21-year-old acquaintance of ZaVhon, as the suspect in the
shooting. Amaya was believed to have been playing with the rifle when it discharged, fatally wounding ZaVhon. After the shooting, Amaya fled the scene on foot and remained at large for several days. An arrest warrant was issued for Amaya on charges of manslaughter.
Amaya was eventually taken into custody and charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He had a history of prior arrests, including charges of burglary, theft, and evading arrest. The bail for Amaya was set at $150,000.
