On February 25, 1981, John T. McCarthy, a 24-year-old male officer with the Dallas Police Department, was tragically shot and killed. Officer McCarthy and his partner were responding to a suspicious vehicle parked near White Rock Lake. They observed two partially clothed individuals in the car and instructed them to leave. As Officer McCarthy was returning to his vehicle, the suspect stepped out and shot him in the head. The suspect then fled into the lake but was later arrested when he emerged.
The suspect, Stephen Ray Nethery, was convicted of Officer McCarthy's murder. Nethery was found guilty of raping a 22-year-old woman in his car when McCarthy and his partner arrived at the scene. Nethery was subsequently executed for his crimes.
Officer McCarthy had served with the Dallas Police Department for two years and was survived by his wife. His death is remembered as a significant loss to the department and the community.
