On May 12, 1987, 9-year-old Kandy Janell Kirtland, a fourth-grade student at Crockett Elementary School in Bryan, Texas, was abducted from her home after being dropped off by the school bus. Her parents found her backpack on the front porch and the front door open, but Kandy was nowhere to be found. Her decomposed body was discovered along a creek almost two weeks later.
She had been shot once in the head after her hands had been tied with electrical cord.
Authorities quickly launched an investigation and identified a suspect, James Otto Earhart, a 44-year-old local junk dealer who matched the description provided by witnesses. Earhart was seen talking to Kandy shortly before her disappearance and had inquired about buying a paint gun from the Kirtlands the day before. On May 22, 1987, the Bryan Police Department issued an arrest warrant for Earhart. He was arrested without offering any resistance on May 26, 1987, and a .22-caliber pistol was seized from his vehicle.
During the investigation, authorities found a piece of paper with the Kirtland's home address written on it and newspaper clippings regarding Kandy's abduction at Earhart's residence. Despite the evidence, Earhart denied any responsibility in the girl's abduction. He was later convicted of capital murder and executed by lethal injection on August 11, 1999.
The tragic case of Kandy Janell Kirtland remains a somber reminder of the importance of community vigilance and swift law enforcement response in cases of child abduction and murder.
