Gary Lee Williams, a 37-year-old male officer of the San Antonio Police Department, tragically lost his life on March 27, 1989. He was shot and killed while responding to a suspicious vehicle call on NE Loop 410 at around 3 am. Patrolman Williams was dispatched to check on an abandoned vehicle parked behind a closed restaurant when a car pulled into the road. The subjects exited their car to speak with Patrolman Williams, and a scuffle ensued.
During the altercation, they took his service weapon and shot him twice, in the lower abdomen and the neck.
Despite being transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, Patrolman Williams succumbed to his wounds while undergoing surgery. His dedication and bravery were evident as he had managed to retrieve one of the subject's driver's licenses and entered the license plate into the computer, which led to the apprehension of the suspects. The suspects, Julian Hernandez, 28, and his brother David Henry Hernandez, 25, both of San Antonio, were named in capital warrants for the death of Patrolman Williams. Julian Hernandez was sentenced to 55 years, and David Henry Hernandez received a 10-year sentence for aggravated assault.
Patrolman Williams had served with the San Antonio Police Department for three years and is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, and sister. His death was a significant loss to the community and his colleagues, who remember him for his service and sacrifice.
