Douglas Scott Zykowski, a 26-year-old male, tragically lost his life on January 19, 1990, in Sutton County, Texas. He and his newlywed wife, Patricia Walsh, had left Seattle, Washington, in November 1989 to hitchhike to Georgia for a religious workshop. On their way back, they accepted a ride near El Paso, Texas, and were reported missing by their families after failing to make contact.
Zykowski's body was discovered on January 21, 1990, near Interstate 10 in Sutton County, about 30
miles east of Ozona. His remains were not identified until May 1992. Patricia Walsh's body was found in central Utah by deer hunters in October 1990 and was identified in 2003 using dental records and DNA testing.
The couple were later confirmed as victims of serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades. Rhoades, a long-haul truck driver, was arrested in April 1990 in Arizona after a state trooper discovered him torturing a woman in the sleeper compartment of his truck. He was charged with the abductions and murders of Zykowski and Walsh, and he pled guilty to their murders. Rhoades received two life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Rhoades was also linked to the murder of Regina Walters, a 14-year-old runaway from Texas, whose body was found in Illinois. He is suspected of killing at least four people in 1990 and raping two women who survived. Rhoades' truck was equipped with a hidden compartment where he tortured his victims before killing them.
