John Perry, a 30-year-old Black male, lost his life in the line of duty on December 16, 2008, in St. Louis, Missouri. A Deputy U.S. Marshal, Perry was part of a dedicated team of approximately ten U.S. Marshals and St. Louis police officers who arrived at a residence on Osage Street in the early morning hours, around 6:50 am. Their mission was to serve a felony warrant on a suspect wanted for assault on a law enforcement officer and drug possession.
The officers prioritized the safety of several children in the home, successfully removing them before beginning their search for the wanted man.
As the team moved through the house, the suspect unexpectedly opened fire. The sudden violence of the ambush resulted in Deputy Marshal Perry and a St. Louis police officer being struck by gunfire. In a subsequent exchange of fire, a second deputy marshal was hit, and the suspect was shot and killed, bringing an end to the immediate threat. Despite the quick response and efforts of his fellow officers, Perry's injuries were severe. He was rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment but tragically succumbed to his wounds later that day.
Deputy Marshal John Perry had a long and distinguished career in law enforcement. He had served with the United States Marshals Service for a decade, with postings in both Washington, D.C., and St. Louis. Before joining the Marshals, he had dedicated 16 years to serving as a probation officer for the Madison County, Illinois Probation and Court Services Department. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, he was posthumously promoted to Protective Intelligence Investigator by the U.S. Marshals Service. His death was a profound loss to his family, which included his three children and his fiancée, as well as to his colleagues in the law enforcement community who remembered his dedication and courage.
