Sylvester Walton, a 44-year-old male from Fort Worth, Texas, was tragically killed on December 27, 1993. Walton was shot in the face with a .32-caliber pistol by Desmond Dominique Jennings during a robbery at Walton's residence. Jennings, along with an accomplice named John Freeman, had entered Walton's home under the pretense of seeking drugs. Upon being asked what they wanted, Jennings shot Walton in the face, killing him instantly.
Jennings then proceeded to steal a pouch from Walton's pockets before moving further into the house.
Inside the residence, Jennings and Freeman encountered Wanda Matthews, a 27-year-old female, who was rising from a bed. Jennings shot Matthews in the head, and upon hearing her moan as they were leaving, he returned and shot her a second time. The police later determined that the killings were drug-related, as Jennings and Freeman were involved in a series of drug-related robberies in Fort Worth during that period.
Several days after the murders, John Freeman was arrested while driving a car that matched the description of a vehicle used in the robbery. A loaded .32-caliber handgun was found in the trunk of the car, and ballistics testing linked the bullets to the bodies of Walton and Matthews. In 1995, Jennings was convicted of two counts of capital murder for the deaths of Walton and Matthews and was sentenced to death. Freeman was also convicted of murder and received a 30-year prison sentence.
Jennings was executed by lethal injection on November 16, 1999. He declined to make a last statement before his execution. The case highlighted the severe consequences of drug-related crimes and the impact they can have on innocent victims and their families.
