Raymond Dale "Red" Litchfield, a 49-year-old Caucasian male from Copperas Cove, Texas, was tragically found dead in his home on January 29, 1999. He was a lifelong resident of Copperas Cove and had spent his life working in the construction business. On the day of his death, he was found by his wife, Margaret Litchfield, in the kitchen of their home, having suffered gunshot wounds from a .22-caliber weapon.
Initially, the case went cold, but it was reopened in January 2014 by Coryell
County District Attorney Dusty Boyd. The investigation revealed that Margaret Litchfield had financial motives for the murder, as she had not informed Raymond about $8,000 charged to his credit card, which he was planning to use for a new boat loan on the day he was killed. Margaret was arrested in April 2015 and later tried for the murder.
The trial, which began in October 2016, included testimony from 33 witnesses and over 140 exhibits. The jury deliberated for four hours before returning a guilty verdict against Margaret Litchfield. She was sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of her husband. The conviction was affirmed by the 6th Court of Appeals of the State of Texas in December 2017.
