On August 9, 2023, at approximately 2:03 a.m., Copperas Cove Police responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Main Street following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered 37-year-old Richard Jerome Powers unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene by Coryell County Justice of the Peace John Guinn.
