Yosef Tulu, a 31-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, was tragically shot and killed on January 21, 2014, while working as a clerk at a 7-Eleven in Garland, Texas. Tulu was known for his friendly demeanor and was studying nursing with plans to marry his fiancée in Ethiopia. His death sent shockwaves through the community, and a large crowd gathered for a vigil in his honor.
The investigation into Tulu's death led to the arrest of 18-year-old Colten Jon Moore, who was charged with capital
murder. Police found surveillance footage showing Moore, wearing a mask and carrying a rifle with a scope, entering the store and robbing Tulu before shooting him twice. Moore later confessed to the crime and also admitted to shooting another clerk at a nearby convenience store a week earlier.
Moore's trial revealed that he had been planning the shooting for some time and had used his father's rifle for the crime. He was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder. The case highlighted the devastating impact of such senseless violence on both the victims and their families.
Tulu's family, still grieving, set up a fund to support themselves during this difficult time. His brother-in-law, Andualem Shoro, spoke on behalf of the family, asking for prayers and support. The community's response to Tulu's death showed the deep respect and affection they had for him, and the collective desire for justice in the wake of such a tragic event.
