According to police reports, Todhunter used a Glock .45 to shoot McClain in the head before turning the gun on herself. McClain's mother discovered the bodies after becoming concerned when he missed his son's baseball game. The couple had been together for about a year, and friends reported that Todhunter was having a difficult time coping with the breakup.
On May 24, 2014, McClain had called the police to report that Todhunter had threatened to kill herself. She left the home before the police arrived, and they were unable to locate her at that time. This incident was one of several concerning calls made to the police regarding the couple's relationship.
The Rowlett Police Department concluded that McClain's death was a result of homicide, while Todhunter's death was ruled a suicide. No arrests or suspects were identified in connection with the case, as it was determined to be a tragic outcome of a domestic dispute.
This case did not lead to any further litigations or investigations, as the circumstances were clear and no foul play beyond the initial incident was suspected. The community was deeply affected by the loss, and McClain was remembered as a dedicated Navy veteran and loving father.
