Xavier Tremaine Rollins, a 25-year-old African American male from Texarkana, Texas, was tragically shot to death on June 17, 2014. He was found outside his apartment on College Drive, and despite numerous witness interviews and evidence collection, the case remained unsolved for years.
In March 2024, the Texarkana Police Department requested assistance from Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit.
With advancements in DNA evidence testing, the unit was able to identify 27-year-old Cameron Cheatham as the suspect. Cheatham was arrested in October 2024 for the murder of Rollins. The investigation revealed that Cheatham was still in the Bi-State Jail for a felony probation violation, which made it easier for authorities to locate and arrest him.
The case highlights the importance of cold case units and advancements in forensic technology in solving long-standing crimes. Rollins' mother held a community vigil in August 2024 to mark the 10th anniversary of her son's slaying, and the arrest brought some closure to the family and the community.
