Rebecca Paige Stay, a 6-year-old girl of Caucasian ethnicity, tragically lost her life on July 9, 2014, in Spring, Texas. She was one of six family members killed in a horrific massacre carried out by Ronald Lee Haskell, who was motivated by a desire for revenge against his ex-wife, Melannie Lyon. Haskell, who had a history of physically abusing his ex-wife and their children, traveled from California to Texas to carry out the attack.
On the day of the incident, Haskell disguised himself
as a FedEx deliveryman to gain access to the Stay family's home. Once inside, he held the children at gunpoint and demanded to know the whereabouts of his ex-wife. When the parents, Stephen Stay and Katie Stay , arrived home, Haskell shot each family member execution-style, including Rebecca and her siblings: 13-year-old Bryan, 9-year-old Emily, 7-year-old Rebecca, and 4-year-old Zach. Cassidy Stay, then 15 years old, survived the attack by playing dead.
Haskell was arrested after a four-hour standoff with law enforcement and later charged with capital murder. During his trial, Haskell's defense team argued that he was suffering from severe mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorder, which prevented him from understanding the wrongfulness of his actions. However, the jury rejected his insanity defense and found him guilty of capital murder.
In 2019, Ronald Lee Haskell was sentenced to death for the killings. Cassidy Stay, who survived the attack, addressed Haskell during the sentencing phase, expressing her hope that he would receive the punishment he deserved from God. The tragic loss of Rebecca and her family members left a lasting impact on the community and highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and mental illness.
