Rhonda Rochelle Williams, a 43-year-old woman of African American ethnicity, tragically lost her life on August 25, 2020, in Spring, Texas. Rhonda was killed by her husband, Ralph Leroy Cooper, in what was determined to be a case of domestic violence. The couple had moved to Spring to live with relatives, bringing along their three-year-old son.
On the night of the incident, Cooper asked Rhonda to come to the house where he and their son were staying.
An argument ensued, and Cooper, armed with a gun, chased Rhonda around the house. When she ran outside, he shot her multiple times, including a fatal shot to the head. After the shooting, Cooper fled the scene in a black Cadillac CTS.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation into Rhonda's death. Cooper was later taken into custody and charged with murder. In January 2024, just before his trial was set to begin, Cooper pleaded guilty to the charges. He was subsequently sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of his wife. Assistant District Attorney Kelly Marshall highlighted that Cooper had two prior convictions for assaulting other women before marrying Rhonda.
District Attorney Kim Ogg emphasized the seriousness with which her office views acts of domestic violence and the devastating impact it has on families. Cooper will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least half of his sentence, and he faces additional charges in Brazoria County that could extend his time in prison.
The memory of Rhonda Williams serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of addressing such issues to prevent further tragedies.
